Occupational therapy is as a profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by enabling people to do things that will enhance their ability to participate or by modifying the environment to better support participation. Lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic fluid that causes swelling, most often in the arms and/or legs. Lymphedema can develop when lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired, or when lymph vessels are damaged or lymph nodes removed. Untreated, lymphedema can cause reduced oxygen availability to tissues, interfere with healing, and increase the prevalence of infections. Physical Therapy (PT) is considered a conservative treatment method to address treatment, healing and prevention of injuries and disabilities. PT focuses primarily, but not solely,on pain relief, promoting healing, and restoring function and movement associated with injury. Other areas within physical therapy are ergonomic (body mechanic) training, fitness/ wellness, and especially education and prevention.
